URGENT XL2 QUESTION!

My mate has just bought an ebay XL2 from America. It will be shipped to the UK whenever whenever. The problem here is, is that I seem to recall American XL2's use NTSC or something different which makes it hard to use in the UK, or they have a different firewire connection or something - or a possible issue with the tapes..

Can anyone back that up or disprove it?

Will an American XL2 be fine to use in the UK? It was just a rumour I heard whilst shooting in scotland.

It will shoot NTSC.

A friend of mine's life became a living hell for 6 months as he fought in vain to output footage or play out to a video deck with some NTSC footage.

A lot of decks and NLE's dont support it.

You could get the tapes transferred to PAL but I think this is quite costly.

Eventually he found some programme to ouput the thing to dvd.

He has quite a wrinkly forehead for a 24 year old.

If you want my advice I would steer clear.

PAL is better looking anyway. A lot of american people shoot PAL.

NTSC DV cameras shoot at a different resolution and at a different framerate. You'll have major issues trying to get it to look as good as if you'd just shot on PAL in the first place.

As long as you stay NTSC the whole time you won't have any issues. It will be when you try to take your NTSC tapes and play them in a PAL country.

You can import the NTSC footage--Edit it and output it back to NTSC and all will be well in the world.

By the way PAL has better color and resolution so I don't know why you have gotten an NTSC camera....

Here in Yankee-land I have shot film at 25fps then had a PAL TK but everything stayed in PAL we had no issues.

Thanks for all the advice - living in Britain, using NTSC would be a nightmare. There was nothing on the ebay item info to suggest it was PAL or NTSC, but we'll make sure to find out before purchasing next time.

It turned out that this seller of the XL2 was actually taken down for fraud yesterday - so my friend nearly parted with 2k for nothing!!! [img]redface.gif[/img]
